Tower Hill New Faculty Members – Get to Know the New Faces Around School!

With so much going on in the first few weeks of school, it is often difficult to take the time to notice the new faces of teachers roaming the hallways. To help students get to know the people behind the faces, I asked each new faculty member at Tower Hill to answer a few questions for us.  Who knows? Perhaps you both share a favorite hobby, TV show, or book!

  1. Name? Hometown?

Steven McCarthy.

Honey Brook, PA.

  1.    Name of the school that you previously taught at? Was it different or similar to Tower Hill? (If this is your first teaching job, feel free to write “N/A”). I taught at an all boys boarding school in Asheville, NC for three years. It was different from Tower Hill in the sense that instead of getting emails about questions, students would knock on my door. I student taught before that in Puerto Rico for a Department of Defense school.
  1.    What led you to Tower Hill? How are you liking it so far?

I decided to leave my other school to be closer to my friends and family. I was really drawn in by the students and their determination to do well in their many roles as students and athletes.

  1.    How did you spend this past summer?

I spent much of my summer traveling and writing my graduate thesis.

  1.    What is your favorite thing to do in your free time?

Spend time with my friends and family.

  1.    What is your favorite food or snack? Favorite drink?

I love anything spicy. My favorite drink is chocolate milk.

My favorite book is Lord of the Flies.

  1.    What is something you are terrified of?

I am terrified of spiders… they are horrible creatures.

  1.    If you could teach any topic other than the one you teach now, what would it be? Why?

Philosophy. I read a lot of interesting books on it when I was younger; none caught my attention like the ones that made me question the world’s existence or the meaning of life.

10.Tell us a fun fact/something interesting or unusual about yourself!

I have an identical twin brother.

Hometown: Born in Baltimore and grew up in Conowingo, Maryland

  1. Previous School: North East High School for 11 years; The honors and AP classes are similar to Tower Hill while the other classes are quite different.

3.What led you to Tower Hill? How are you liking it so far? I wanted to enhance my career while at the same time provide my son the unique opportunities that Tower Hill offers. Tower Hill has been a great experience so far. I have felt very welcomed by the students and staff.

  1. How did you spend this past summer? I spent this past summer camping with my wife and son. We spent a good amount of time at the Delaware and Maryland beaches.
  1. What is your favorite thing to do in your free time? I enjoy spending time with my family and traveling to unique places.
  1. What is your favorite food or snack? Favorite drink? My favorite food is steamed crabs; My favorite drink: water
  1. Favorite movie? TV show? Book? Quote? (Feel free to choose one or name all). I enjoy reading any historical non-fiction. I am currently watching Boardwalk Empire.

8.What is something you are terrified of? I am terrified of uneducated voters.

  1. If you could teach any topic other than the one you teach now, what would it be? Why? Astronomy. I think it is fascinating, but overwhelming.
  1. Tell us a fun fact/something interesting or unusual about yourself! I have taught in three states and eight different schools in my seventeen year career.

Also: At my former school, the first day of school was canceled because of an earthquake. It occurred while I was sitting in my classroom during a professional day.

  1. Name? Hometown? Dorothy Escobar from New Jersey
  1. Name of the school that you previously taught at? Was it different or similar to Tower Hill? Previously taught at Chaminade-Madonna College Preparatory in Hollywood, FL, a small Catholic high school. I taught chemistry, biology, anatomy and physiology.
  1. What led you to Tower Hill? How are you liking it so far? I came to Tower Hill because my husband and I were relocating to the NJ/PA area to be closer to our three grown children and other family.  The people at Tower Hill are very friendly and have been helpful. The welcome I’ve received from the new teachers has been great.
  1. How did you spend this past summer? I spent this summer on Long Beach Island in New Jersey; it is where we spend every summer.
  1. What is your favorite thing to do in your free time? In my free time I love to read and watch sports.
  1. What is your favorite food or snack? Favorite drink? Chocolate would be a favorite food, and a good cup of tea would be a favorite drink.
  1. Favorite movie? TV show? Book? Quote? I have so many favorite books it would be hard to choose.  I have always belonged to a book club to keep up with current literature.  I recently enjoyed Brain on Fire and Resurrecting Amelia.
  1. What is something you are terrified of? I fear heights, not one for roller coasters for sure.

Christopher Sanna, Wilmington DE

  1. Name of the school that you previously taught at? Was it different or similar to Tower Hill? Conrad Schools of Science. It is a magnet school in Wilmington. The class sizes were significantly larger than here at Tower Hill (30 students a class) and the schedule was much different (88 minute classes)
  1. What led you to Tower Hill? How are you liking it so far?

I was drawn to Tower Hill by the school’s prestigious reputation. It has been a great experience so far – I’m impressed by the students, and the staff has been very welcoming and helpful.

  1. How did you spend this past summer?

I spent this past summer roofing and spending time with my wife and our newborn.

  1. What is your favorite thing to do in your free time?

Spending time with my family (wife and 6-month-old son) and following all Philadelphia sports teams.

  1. What is your favorite food or snack? Favorite drink?

Food: pizza. Drink: coffee.

  1. Favorite movie? TV show? Book? Quote? Favorite movie: Rocky II. Favorite Quote: “life’s greatest battles do not always go to the biggest, fastest, strongest or most intelligent man. But, eventually, life’s greatest battles go to the man who thinks he can. “
  1. What is something you are terrified of?

Sharks.

  1. If you could teach any topic other than the one you teach now, what would it be? Why?

Anatomy and Physiology. I have always had an interest in how the body works.

  1. Tell us a fun fact/something interesting or unusual about yourself

I have three other siblings who are all teachers.

  1. Name? Hometown? Hannah Kelly. I’m originally from Albuquerque, New Mexico.
  2. Name of the school that you previously taught at? Was it different or similar to Tower Hill? I was teaching at Culver Academies, in Culver, Indiana. Culver is a military boarding school, so I have had to get accustomed to seeing students not wearing a uniform. Also, I used to live in a dorm, so I got to know a lot of my students really well.
  3. What led you to Tower Hill? How are you liking it so far? I just got married two months ago to a Wilmington native, so I needed to relocate to the East Coast. So far, I am very impressed by Tower Hill, particularly by the warmth of the community here.
  4. How did you spend this past summer? I spent the majority of my summer planning my wedding and getting ready to move to Delaware. My husband and I did get to spend a few weeks at the beach relaxing, though.
  5. What is your favorite thing to do in your free time? I enjoy cooking and reading, but I love to play sports, especially soccer.
  6. What is your favorite food or snack? Favorite drink? Anything Mexican or New Mexican. I really miss Southwestern food.
  7. Favorite movie? TV show? Book? Quote? My favorite movie is La vita e bella (Life is Beautiful), and currently my favorite TV show is Chopped, though I’m looking forward to the new season of Sherlock.
  8. What is something you are terrified of? I am terrified of spiders; I always have my husband kill any creatures that we have around the house.
  9. If you could teach any topic other than the one you teach now, what would it be? Why? I would love to teach English. Originally, I wanted to double major in English and Spanish, but it just didn’t work out. However, I love reading and analyzing literature.
  10. Tell us a fun fact/something interesting or unusual about yourself! I played soccer in college, but I actually walked on to my college team. Also, I am one of six kids – four brothers and one sister – which makes for entertaining family reunions!

  2. Name of the school that you previously taught at? Was it different or similar to Tower Hill? I have never taught at a school, but I used to go to Wilmington Friends when I was little.
  3. What led you to Tower Hill? How are you liking it so far? I came to Tower Hill in 7th grade from Wilmington Friends, our “arch rival.” My dad, a graduate of Friends, was not particularly happy about the switch, but he learned to adjust. Clearly, I’ve liked it enough that I stayed for my four years of high school!
  4. How did you spend this past summer? I spent this past summer interning in Washington, DC for a lobbying firm. I got to work with lots of senators and politicians and travel to Capitol Hill. It was awesome.
  5. What is your favorite thing to do in your free time? I like to write on my blog (kellykollias.blogspot.com) and listen to music. I also like hanging out with my toy poodle, Beau.
  6. What is your favorite food or snack? Favorite drink? I have a lot of favorite foods. I’d have to go with any type of pasta. I am also a sandwich fanatic. My favorite drink is Coke even though I know it is very bad for you.
  7. Favorite movie? TV show? Book? Quote? Favorite TV show: Breaking Bad. My favorite book is Gone Girl by Gillian Flynn; actually, anything by Gillian Flynn is pretty awesome. If you are into murder mysteries, you should definitely read that. My favorite quote was by a forum speaker last year (Patrick Chambers, head basketball coach from Penn State): “Don’t let the world tell you what’s right.”
  8. What is something you are terrified of? Spiders are pretty scary. The dark. I have a wild imagination, so I get scared pretty easily.
  9. If you could teach any topic other than the one you teach now, what would it be? Why? Well . . . if I taught a class it would probably be History, or one where you are given a modern world crisis and you have to think of solutions to solve it. It would be pretty cool to teach a language, too.
  10. Tell us a fun fact/something interesting or unusual about yourself! I am bilingual (trilingual if you count learning Spanish in high school, but I am not sure how much that qualifies). I speak Greek and English. My yiayia (grandmother) lives with me at home and she does not speak English, so I get plenty of practice with her.
