A review of this year’s Grammy Awards and Winners.

The Grammys – Music’s Biggest Night

The Grammy Award Ceremony was first held May 4th, 1959 and was established to recognize outstanding musical achievement. The golden trophy, crafted to model a gramophone, has been coveted by many talented singers, songwriters and bands.  There are four general awards given to the nominees: Album of the Year, Record of the Year, Song of the Year, and Best New Artist. Other awards are given in more specific genres, such as Best Music Video. Because there are over 80 Grammy Awards presented for different categories, television only broadcasts the most popular awards.  Some quick facts for my fellow music history nerds:

  • The band with the highest number of Grammys is U2 with 22 Grammys.
  • The female with the highest number of Grammy Awards is Alison Krauss with 27 Grammys.
  • The highest number of awards for a man, George Stoli, is 31, and it remains the highest number of Grammys in history.

The 56th Grammys were held on January 26th in Los Angeles, California and hosted some of today’s most popular singers and bands.  Here are a few of the most popular results:

Record of the Year – “Get Lucky” by Daft Punk

Album of the Year – “Random Access Memories” by Daft Punk

Song of the Year – “Royals” by Lorde

Best New Artists – Macklemore and Ryan Lewis

Performances at the 2014 event included an emotional rendition by Paul McCartney of the classic Beatles song, “Yesterday.”  Jay-Z joined McCartney in the performance, combining music of the past with the music of the present. Other significant performances included ones by Macklemore and Ryan Lewis, where multiple LGBT community members were united in marriage.

As always, when celebrities get together to celebrate, drama, rumors, and “cat fights” ensue. This year many of the stars opted to not attend the ceremony, even household names such as Miley Cyrus, Rihanna, Lady Gaga, Justin Timberlake, and Justin Bieber. Cyrus chose to stay home and rock out on Guitar Hero, while Bieber had some other business to take care of, mainly allegations concerning his DUI and drug-related arrest.
