Gracie Firestone ’11

As many of you know, I started Let the Kids Play going into my junior year at THS to provide underprivileged youth with new-to-lightly-used athletic equipment. With your help, LTKP has donated equipment and funded the athletic programs of Nativity Preparatory School in Wilmington, DE, and Flying Kites Global, an orphanage 90 minutes outside of Nairobi, Kenya. Our local community has raised over $5,000 for LTKP over the years. In 2011, when I collapsed two days post-graduation, my community and I were anxious to learn what I’d be capable of doing, physically and mentally. In early August, family and friends advised me not to go to college at the end of the month and doctors said that playing soccer was out of the question. LTKP had been placed last on the list of things to think about. Three weeks later, I went to college, remained in the honors program, played soccer, and managed to keep LTKP constantly in my thoughts. Then, I didn’t know what my next step should be after such an incident. Now I know, but I need your help.

This winter, I want to climb Mt. Kilimanjaro for the Flying Kites children and stay with their families for three weeks after the climb as a volunteer/ambassador. To do so, I must raise $8,000 for their family by mid-December. This trip has been a dream of mine for years now, and will enable me to test my physical limits (as I have been restricted from varsity soccer by decisions based solely on legal protocol), expand LTKP and its prospects, and understand the medical care in Kenya and nearby countries. I am a Pre-Med major and want to analyze global areas that most urgently need to be addressed to better save lives. I know that if I did not live where I do, with access to top medical care, I simply would not be here today. To support young children with dreams and healthy lives around the world, I’d like to invite you and your family to a fundraising brunch at Piccolina Toscana in Wilmington, DE on Sunday, November 11th, from 11 am – 1 pm. There will be food, drinks, and a silent auction, along with several other optional activities. Proceeds will benefit Flying Kites, and any lightly-used athletic equipment that you can offer will go to the Wilmington YMCA of DE.
